Timeline of extreme weather events

Worldwide, 2012 was remarkable for extreme weather events. The World Resources Institute put together an interactive timeline highlighting 36 stories from the first eight months of the year that exemplify unusual conditions linked to climate change.

Tracking more than 125 years of temperature changes throughout the world, this 26-second animated graphic from NASA illustrates Earth's dramatic warming in since the beginning of the "modern record" in 1880. In 2011, the Earth's average temperature was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline.
The warming trend of the past 10 years exceeds the localized, temporary heat waves of previous decades.
